Insight To Help You Clean Up Dog Urine Stains From Your Carpeting

Bringing a new puppy into your home can bring with it a lot of entertainment, but also a great deal of work. House training your new puppy can be a challenge, depending on the type of breed and gender of your dog, and it can be difficult to keep your home's carpeting and rugs clean after each accident. Here are some tips to help you clean up dog urine stains from your carpets.

Perform Stain Cleaning Immediately

One of the keys to removing and cleaning pet stains from your carpeting and rugs is to clean them up as soon as possible. It can be helpful when you catch your dog in the act or step into the wet spot with your bare foot, because you know the spot is fresh and can clean it up immediately. As pet stains sit and the moisture evaporates, the pH of the stain increases and the bacteria multiplies, increasing the smell of the stain as well. The longer the stain sits, it can crystallize in the carpeting and permanently discolor your carpeting.

When you encounter a wet dog urine spot in your carpeting, immediately blot it up as much as possible with a towel. Press the towel into the carpeting with your foot or with your hands to soak up the moisture from the carpeting and any under-layer of padding. Then, continue by treating the stain with an appropriate cleaner.

Use the Right Cleaning Agents

After you have pulled all the urine from the carpet, soak the area with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Vinegar is a good acidic cleaner you can use on regular polyester carpeting or on delicate wool carpeting, as it won't cause damage to the wool's fibers. Be sure to coat the solution over and a couple inches around the outside of the spot to ensure you treat all the stain. Let the mixture sit on the carpeting for a few minutes, then blot up the vinegar and water with a new towel. It can be helpful to use a shop vacuum to pull up the moisture.

To help remove odors and stains of more tougher urine spots, after applying the vinegar and water solution, sprinkle baking soda liberally over the spot and scrub it into the carpeting with a scrub brush or work it around with your fingers. Let this mixture sit to work at the stain, then blot up the moisture with a towel. After the spot is dry, vacuum up any remaining baking soda to finish the cleaning.

To treat more set-in stain, you can find a pet stain cleaner containing enzymes and spray it over the carpet spot. The enzymes in the solution break down the materials in the urine that cause the off-putting smell.
